Queensland planning legislation to be improved
Less red tape, streamlined processing and a reform to infrastructure charges are set to overhaul the state’s planning laws and speed up development in Queensland, according to the state’s Deputy Premier.
The announcement comes after a Planning Forum in March indicated there was overwhelming support for changes to the planning legislation, which was cumbersome and hindered the property and construction sectors, according to industry experts.
Deputy Premier and Minister for State Development, Infrastructure and Planning Jeff Seeney made the announcement at a Property Council of Australia function recently when he said “We need to drive a major transformation of the state’s planning system and culture from its current approach, which is actually stifling development,” says Seeney.
This will greatly assist local governments to better plan for their communities, without the constraints of an overly burdensome and prescriptive approach to their planning schemes, and work is well under way to bring this important piece of legislation to a reality.
It is expected the new planning legislation will be introduced to parliament early next year and the sooner the better.
