Queensland Government considers selling magic irreplaceable waterfront land
Doug Jennings Park at The Spit and Wave Break Island on the Gold Coast Australia could be sold off in a deal potentially worth $400 million or more to be used as a cruise ship terminal.
The Liberal Government stated that it would not spend "one cent" of taxpayer money on a cruise ship terminal for the Gold Coast, but would provide the land for private enterprise to develop a terminal.
The State Liberal Government may sell this prized parcel of land to the consortium that wins the tender to build the Broadwater Marine Project, which will include the cruise ship terminal as well as hotels, a casino and other tourist facilities.
Four consortiums this week were shortlisted to put forward detailed proposals for the project, which would be developed on the State Government-owned land.
The Liberal Government and the Gold Coast City Council are expected to announce later this year which, if any, of the four consortiums will be given the go-ahead.
Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate said he would not oppose any attempts to sell the public land.
Gold Coast-based property valuer Iain Herriot said Doug Jennings Park and Wave Break Island could easily fetch $300-400 million if they were joined to the mainland with bridges and had approvals in place to allow the development of a cruise ship terminal, casino, hotels, residential and retail facilities.
